“The Nutcracker” March — 3 Practice Tips
1. Maintain the “bouncy” rhythm of the right-hand melody
- Start by practicing with the right hand only, focusing on light staccato played with the fingertips.
- Use a metronome to gradually increase the tempo from quarter note = 80 → 92 → 100, eliminating rhythm instability.
2. Keep the left-hand accompaniment light as a “supporting role”
- Keep chords from becoming heavy by holding the wrist slightly high and avoiding too much arm weight.
- Control volume within pp–mf, ensuring the right-hand melody always remains in front.
3. Combine strong beat accents with pedaling
- Add light accents only on the first beats of measures (e.g., bars 1 and 3) for a march-like feel, while softening beats 2 and 3 for contrast.
- Change the pedal at the start of each measure to prevent muddiness and maintain crispness.
