What is “Ode to Joy”?

“Ode to Joy” is the famous melody that appears in the 4th movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 in D minor, Op.125. (Also known in Japanese as “Kanki no Uta,” “Song of Joy,” or “Hymn to Joy.”)
The original text is Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” a grand poem themed around love for humanity, freedom, and equality. Today, it is widely known as “Daiku” (The Ninth) in Japan and is a traditional piece sung in choirs at the end of the year.
The melody is very simple and easy to remember, making it highly recommended for piano beginners.
