What is “The Entertainer”?
“The Entertainer” is a piano rag composed by Scott Joplin in 1902, and one of his most famous pieces.
It became world-famous when it was used as the theme for the 1973 film The Sting.
Its distinctive bouncy rhythm and friendly melody give it a charm that sits somewhere between classical and popular music.
Performance Tips and Practice Points
- The right and left hands need to move independently of each other.
- Start by practicing each hand separately to internalize the rhythm, then put both hands together slowly at a reduced tempo.
- If the left-hand octave jumps are difficult, it’s fine to simplify them or leave them out.
